Rumors that Lady Gaga would play Donatella Versace in the upcoming series “Versace: American Crime Story” abounded last fall after Us Weekly reported that she’d nabbed the role — a choice casting that made a lot of sense. (Gaga has starred in an ad campaign for the Italian house and has a song called “Donatella” on her album “Artpop,” after all.) Though the rumor was later debunked by the FX show’s Executive Producer Ryan Murphy himself, eager fans have been left without any idea of who the real leading lady would be — until now.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Penelope Cruz was confirmed as the director’s pick on Monday. Notably, this will mark Cruz’s first regular role in a TV series, as she has stuck mostly to movies in the past. In her role as Donatella, Cruz will join actors Edgar Ramirez and Darren Criss in telling the story of Gianni Versace‘s murder by serial killer Andrew Cunanan. Though Cruz doesn’t have quite the history with both the house of Versace and producer Ryan Murphy that Gaga does, the Oscar nominations and awards she has under her proverbial belt are enough to convince us that she’ll do just fine as Donatella.
The third season of “American Crime Story” will consist of ten episodes and will debut in 2018.
