The Fiona Apple-Inspired Shirt That’s Reviving Alyssa’s Teen Angst

I admittedly was not yet a teenager when Fiona Apple released her debut album “Tidal” in 1996, but I was certainly old enough to understand how special it was — and how iconic it would become. The emotionally raw, 10-track masterpiece not only spawned one of the greatest music videos of all time (in my humble opinion, at least), but it also went triple-platinum, earned her a Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance, as well as the award for Best New Artist at the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards. Never one to hold back her true feelings, Apple really let loose during her VMA acceptance speech, launching into a tirade about the music business — and the celebrity-obsessed world at large — that has gone down in history… and aged surprisingly well. “This world is bullshit… you shouldn’t model your life about what you think that we think is cool and what we’re wearing and what we’re saying and everything,” she said. “Go with yourself.”

This year marks the 20th anniversary of this magical TV moment. To commemorate it, the music annotation site Genius created a long-sleeve tee emblazoned with Apple’s powerful message as part of its new “1997 Collection” — a line of apparel celebrating the year’s most important music moments. Considering that the world is, in fact, pretty much bullshit right now, I’m planning on adding this piece to my merch collection immediately and proudly wearing my teen angst on my sleeve.

“This World Is Bullshit” Tee, $50, available at Genius.
