The goal-scoring captain got a wonderful reception as the Blues brought Premier League glory back to Stamford Bridge
Chelsea were in party mode at Stamford Bridge on Monday night as they celebrated their Premier League title in a game that was more like a John Terry testimonial than a competitive league match. Goal‘s Nizaar Kinsella was at the game to witness the festivities, and you can watch him discuss all the big talking points from Chelsea’s 4-3 win over Watford in the video below.
Terry made his first league start since September’s 2-2 draw with Swansea City and opened the scoring after 22 minutes. He was then involved in a mix-up with Nathaniel Chalobah, but it was always going to be his night, no matter what happened.
Ninety-six seconds were between Terry’s 67th Chelsea goal and his moment of madness. It shows that the timing of his departure from the top level is right but that he still could be a force for another team next season.
The 36-year-old is leaving at the end of the season, but he is bowing out of Chelsea in the most glorious fashion with his fifth Premier League title and his 15th major honour since joining the club at age 14.
He was the most loudly celebrated player as the names were read out, with Antonio Conte leading Chelsea into a new era of success. Cesar Azpilicueta will be one of the players who takes on the leadership mantle, and he put Chelsea back in front with a stunning volley from the edge of the box, after Eden Hazard’s corner.
Kenedy, Chalobah and Nathan Ake made their first league starts of the season as Chelsea set their sights on a league and cup double. Kenedy and Ake were involved as they laid on a third for west London’s newest hero, Michy Batshuayi.
Daryl Janmaat and Stefano Okaka brought it back to 3-3. But Cesc Fabregas made it 4-3 in a match where the the scoreline didn’t matter as Chelsea’s thoughts edge towards the trophy lift on Sunday.
