Nacho Ambriz announced as Necaxa coach

The club announced the move Monday, four days after parting ways with Alfonso Sosa. Sosa was able to keep the club, promoted in 2016, in the top division but was let go after failing to take Necaxa back to the Liguilla this season after earning a postseason berth in the Apertura.

Ambriz made more than 280 appearances for Los Rayos, winning titles in 1994-95 and 1995-96 as a defender.

“These colors fill me with happiness,” Ambriz said at an introductory news conference. “We’re going to be a team that will fight to be a top team in the tournament.”

The job will be the 52-year-old’s sixth top-division gig in Mexico, where most recently he was the coach at Club America. He led Las Aguilas to the 2015-16 CONCACAF Champions League title but was fired after a slow start to the 2016 Apertura, which also was the club’s 100th anniversary.
