Sunday is the worst night of the week for those with sleep trouble, according to a recent study.
In a survey of 4,279 Americans and Britons conducted by pollsters YouGov for meditation app Calm.com, 46% of people reported having the worst trouble sleeping Sunday compared to other days of the week.
“Many people go to bed later on Friday and Saturday nights and then sleep in later on Saturday and Sunday mornings,” Steve Orma, clinical psychologist and insomnia specialist, said in a release. “So, when they go to bed on Sunday night, they’re often just not tired. And then when they can’t sleep, they start to think about why they’re not sleeping, which only makes things worse.”
Sleep deprivation can cause all sorts of problems: weight gain, memory loss, sickness, depression and even poor vision. Less than seven hours a sleep per night can also throw off hormones.
Another study this week showed lack of sleep can actually make people less attractive, causing those around them to avoid interaction. Maybe there’s something to the term “beauty sleep” after all.
For those struggling with sleep, Orma recommends having a regular wake-up time (even on weekends), limit alcohol and find a way to wind down.
Poll data showed Thursday night as the best night for sleep.
